I love this particular piece, but I find it interesting that I am always reminded of Hunger Games–particularly when Rue dies and Katniss covers her body with flowers to hide the violence of the Games. While I was reading the book this concerto was playing on my headphones and forever cemented these two together in my mind. The music is very emotional and this scene in the book is particularly moving. Tonight it is playing on my record player as part of what has become my nightly ritual.
I generally steer away from the latest trends, so I didn’t want to jump on this vinyl craze because it’s become trendy. I have quite the collection of vinyl records–almost entirely classical music–but they’ve sat mostly abandoned for years. So I bought a turntable which ended up not working with my computer speakers so because I was too lazy to buy an adaptor I instead dug through by boxes of stuff and pulled out my surround sound system that was also unused for years. I connected my turntable, put on a disc, and boy was I unprepared for the richness of the sound produced.
Trend or no trend, I am hooked to vinyl. The sound is so warm and the dynamic range is incredible. Like I often do, I lost myself in research and found out why vinyls are physically unable to have their sound “optimized” for volume like digital was. I’ve come fascinated and now consider this the best listening experience outside of the concert hall.
