365: Day 249 – Focusing on work

I’ve had a hectic week at work, so I’ve been putting on YouTube videos on productivity and entrepreneurs in the background while I work. That, coupled with some strong coffee, has kept me powering through my work. One of my long-term goals is to focus on improving my work ethic and productivity. I love hearing about the stories of successful people who pour themselves into their careers and work 60-80 hour workweeks.

I remember at my first job after college, the company owner (it was a small company) kept raving about conventions she’d go to about improving the work/life balance and spoke of a book called “The 4-Hour Workweek” as if it were her bible. I remember thinking that it was odd that she wanted to find ways to spend more time away from her life’s work. I read the book, and my takeaway was to find ways to work more efficiently and not to figure out a way to minimize work.

So it has been refreshing to learn about people like Elon Musk, Barrack Obama, and Kevin O’Leary who devote themselves to their work and don’t shy away from putting in hours long into the evening. Reaching their level of success would be the jackpot, but it is not the goal. I want to look back on my work and confidently say it was excellent work. This week I’ve gotten some validation on that front. A proposal, a presentation, and multiple reports have resulted in people commenting on the excellent work I’ve produced.

I intentionally skipped yesterday’s post, but it was worth it. Today, I’m patting myself in the back by allowing myself to take some time for this post before I jump back into some more work.
